KEEPING IN TOUCH

Hello everyone – Angela here again!

Well we have now moved to Step 3 of the easing of lockdown – hooray.

As you know, our first event is the Family Singing Afternoon this coming Sunday. Robin Reece Crawford, who many of you know, was recently interviewed on Radio Nottingham by Frances Finn.  She asked him about who was leading the workshop, how we were going to make the whole event Covid Secure, and most importantly, what were people going SING!

Click here to listen to the entertaining interview – it lasts about 5mins.  https://youtu.be/Tokn-S3tQIM

Wanted – a good home for a PIANO!

A lady has contacted MfE to ask if we know anyone who might like an upright piano – no charge, just needs to be collected.  If you are interested, then please reply to this email and we’ll put you in contact with the owner.

Short and sweet this week – have fun avoiding the showers!

KEEPING IN TOUCH

Hello everyone

I’m sure many of you would have heard the welcome news that, as from Monday 17th May, we will have all moved (if you live in England) from Step 2 to Step 3 in the lifting of Covid restrictions.

This is really good news for MfE and it means that our first planned event at the Albert Hall, our Family Sing Workshop has got the green light!

This fun afternoon of singing is especially designed for children aged 5+ with their families – mums, dads, grandparents, carers, aunts and uncles – come and make a bubble!  And if you are an adult and would just like to come for a good sing then you would be made very welcome.

Let’s raise the roof of the Albert Hall with SINGING!!

Enrolling for the workshop is easy – just click here and follow the links. https://www.music-for-everyone.org/event/family-sing-workshop/

Really looking forward to seeing many of you there.

Have a good week

Angela

  • MUSICAL FLASH MOBS PART 2. To celebrate Classic FMs 20th birthday in 2012, they surprised Morrisons shoppers with a performance of Zadok the Priest. Bet that would catch you off guard whilst picking up a loaf of bread! Watch the video here:

KEEPING IN TOUCH

Hello everyone

I’m sure many of you will have watched the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh.  One of our Wollaton Daytime Voices members, Elspeth Brien, sent me this very interesting article by John Rutter in which he reflects on the lack of comment on the excellent music included in the service.  It’s very interesting and well worth a read.

https://johnrutter.com/latest-blog/did-they-mention-the-music?fbclid=IwAR1BXpavVGoFlwji4dmI1RcPyhUm4bRyJS7O6d8wXEQkoyzr5fswbq60DcE

And whilst we’re talking about ‘having a read’ – our three Bookwise shops have all re-opened and are ready to welcome you through their front doors.  These shops successfully raise vital funds to support Music for Everyone’s programme of events and also raise the profile of MfE in the local community.  Selling excellent quality second hand books, they also have a wonderful selection of CDs and sheet music for sale all at bargain prices – why not come and have a browse!

Donations are always welcome and can often be collected and more volunteers are always needed, either in the shop or behind the scenes. Email admin@music-for-everyone.org for more details.

The opening hours for the shops are as follows:

Nottingham (10 Goose Gate, Nottingham NG1 1FF) Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 4pm

Newark (2 Queen’s Head Court, Newark NG24 1EL) Monday to Saturday, 10.00 am to 4:30pm

Southwell (2 Queen Street, Southwell NG25 0AA) Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm (Monday might have restricted opening due to lack of volunteers)

Daytime Voices is back!

We are holding two Daytime Voices rehearsals at the Albert Hall in Nottingham – one on Wednesday 26th May (2pm – 3.45pm) and one on Tuesday 15th June (2pm – 3.45pm).  If you would like to come along to have a good sing on either or both of these sessions but haven’t yet let us know then please fill in this very short questionnaire and we’ll contact you with all the details – just click here https://bit.ly/2Peswl2

We will, of course, be following all Covid protocols.

Hope you enjoyed the bank holiday despite the wet weather!

With all best wishes

Angela

  • MUSICAL FLASH MOBS PART 1. For May, each week we will bring you a different Flash Mob to watch and at the end, tell us your favourite! 1. In honour of Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you…) watch as one trumpet player turns into a whole orchestra playing the Star Wars main theme! Watch the video here:

KEEPING IN TOUCH

Hello everyone

Last week saw our regularly rehearsing youth instrumental groups coming together and once again, making music!

Lots of happy faces and joyous sounds – these pictures give you a bit of an idea as to what went on!

(Nottingham Youth Band, West Bridgford and Beeston, followed by East Midlands Youth String Orchestra and Nottingham Strictly Strings)

And many of our adult singers had an enjoyable on-line rehearsal with ‘yours truly’ last Saturday morning. We were looking at the music we will be ‘bringing to life’ in Nottingham’s Albert Hall on Sunday June 27th (Vaughan Williams, Purcell, Rutter and Holst) and with over 150 singers already signed up for this workshop day, it should be really special. We can accommodate up to 200 singers so if you haven’t signed up yet and would like to come along then just click here for more details https://www.music-for-everyone.org/event/summer-singing-workshop-day

Have a good week

With all best wishes

  • In honour of a MfE birthday over the weekend, we thought we’d share not one, but SIX different versions of the Happy Birthday tune, in the style of Beethoven, Mozart and more! Have a listen and see which is your favourite at the YouTube link here. https://youtu.be/OaZveHbxAYs

Hello everyone

Well we have now reached ‘Step  2’ – perhaps we are gradually creeping towards the ‘new normal’!

And that ‘new normal’ means the return of MfE music activities.  Our website gives full details of our plans for the next 2 or 3 months. Please be assured that all events will be following Covid Secure protocols.  Just click here to see what is on offer https://www.music-for-everyone.org

Enjoy the sunshine.

KEEPING IN TOUCH

Hello everyone

I hope you have all been enjoying today’s very welcome sunshine and also the first step ‘little steps’ in the relaxation of Covid regulations. Spring is definitely in the air and perhaps things are slowly getting back to some sort of ‘normal’.

Last week you should have all received a link to a YouTube message from me – if it didn’t arrive then just click here to see what I said! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLW4TmAnwDQ

And today, Chair of MfE, John Hess, has surrounded himself in Easter eggs and posted a message to you all.  Here is the link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncct7–67BY

Our plans for youth activities continue to develop.  Details about our Youth Wind Band afternoon on Saturday 19th June and our Youth String Orchestra afternoon on Sunday 20th June are now available from our website.  This should be a great way to get young people back into playing so if you know anyone who might be interested then please do encourage them to come along.

Here is the link (click on the title of each event for more details): https://www.music-for-everyone.org/workshops-and-courses/

Next Monday is Easter Monday so MfEMondays is taking the day off!

Have a good Easter break.

With all best wishes

  • Online concert alert! Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky, performed by members of Sinfonia Viva in the atmospheric surroundings of Derby Museum’s Joseph Wright Gallery, all led by MfE Summer School tutor and Sinfonia Viva principal clarinettist Chris Swann. The concert is available until 23 April, here’s the link: https://www.sinfoniaviva.co.uk/Event/wind-quintet-performs-pictures-at-an-exhibition
  • To celebrate Bach’s birthday (31st March… although some debate it’s the 21st!) here’s something interesting we found! Some very clever musicians designed this ‘musical signature’ using just a single note. Did you know that the Germans use the notation H for what we would call Bb, so if you rotate this very clever image starting at the bottom and name the notes from the corresponding clef (treble, tenor and alto) it spells B A C H!

Have a good week!

#MfEMondays are Music for Everyone’s weekly emails designed to keep you up to date with MfE events & to circulate interesting finds, special features, and motivational moments for your Mondays! We are aiming to send out something new each week.

We’ve decided to make March our online fundraising awareness month and today we would like to share with you just how easy (and how completely free to you!) it is to support MfE – simply by shopping online. Yep, you read that right…

Online shopping over the past year has grown by a massive 34.7% from 2019 thanks to the pandemic and being ‘locked down’ for large portions of the year. Not that this is a surprise… online shopping has evolved so much and it has never been so easy to buy a smartwatch or a surfboard at 2 o’clock in the morning.

Let’s start with Amazon. Who doesn’t enjoy a good browse for a cake tin and a garden spade, all in the same place, usually while sitting on the sofa in their pyjamas?

online shopping image
What is AmazonSmile?

AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support every time you shop, at no cost to you and can be activated in the Amazon Shopping App for iOS and Android phones. When you shop AmazonSmile, you’ll find the exact same low prices and convenient shopping experience as amazon.co.uk, with the added bonus that AmazonSmile will donate a portion of the purchase price to your selected charity.

How do you activate it I hear you ask? Simply click on the banner below and it will take you to the AmazonSmile home page where you will see in the top left corner of the menu, ‘Supporting Music for Everyone’. Then enjoy a good shopping spree… it really is that easy!

You can also install a free extension to your web browser so you don’t have to remember to visit Amazon Smile (we’ve all been there… there we are happily shopping online then only remembering that AmazonSmile or Easyfundraising works if you go through the right site, but by then you’re already at the checkout and how much faff is it to go back and start again!?) – Smilematic is a free Edge extension that will automatically turn your everyday Amazon purchases into AmazonSmile donations. You’ll never again miss an opportunity to raise money!

Find out more here: Smilematic | Automated AmazonSmile Extension (couponfollow.com)

Easyfundraising

If you don’t use Amazon all the time, Easyfundraising has over 4,000 online retailers involved with new ones being added all the time, making it so easy to raise funds, all from one main point!

Shops, including eBay, Argos, John Lewis, ASOS, Booking.com and M&S, are all a part of Easyfundraising – and it won’t cost you a penny extra to help us raise funds.

All you need to do is:

  1. Go to https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/musicforeveryone/?utm_campaign=raise-more and join for free.
  2. Every time you shop online, go to easyfundraising first to find the site you want and start shopping.
  3. After you’ve checked out, the retailer will make a donation to Music For Everyone at no extra cost to you whatsoever!

There is also a handy tool on their website that adds a reminder to your web browser so if you’re shopping at your favourite retailer online, it will flash up and let you know you can raise funds – just click go!

Through our generous online shoppers, MfE receives approximately £250 a year through these schemes, did we mention it’s at no cost to you?

THANK YOU to those that already support us when they shop online, we are so grateful and every penny goes to support music making across the East Midlands for adult, youth, singers, players!
