Hello everyone

We were all so terribly sorry that we couldn’t go ahead with the planned Singing Workshop on Sunday because of possible Covid infection amongst the artistic staff. I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that only one person has tested positive (and is only experiencing mild symptoms) and everyone else is fine. Thank you so much for your understanding – we will let you know ASAP if we are able to go ahead with the possible re-arranged date of 24^thJuly.

But music did take place on Sunday! Our Nottingham Youth Band entertained the shoppers at the Sunday Market held at The Garage, Chilwell (former home of Bartons Transport). Here are a few photos capturing the atmosphere of the occasion – as you can see, a good time was had by all!

JOB VACANCY

Some of you might already know that Gill Henshaw, our Principal Woodwind animateur and conductor of the Daytime Orchestras, Blow the Dust workshop and our Summer School wind band is leaving MfE to return to full time teaching. We will all be very sorry to see Gill go – but you’ll be pleased to know she is not waving ‘goodbye’ completely – hooray! She is hoping to be able to return to conduct some of our workshops and also play in our Concert Orchestra.

So we are looking for a replacement Principal Animateur – it could be a wind or string player (or ideally both). Attached is a PDF of the job advert. Hello everyone,

Something positive – at last!

We have just had a wonderful weekend of LIVE music making!

Over 120 of our youth instrumentalists came along to Nottingham’s Albert Hall (wind band players on Saturday and string players on Sunday) and played a kaleidoscopic array of entertaining music. From Bizet’s Toreador March to Queen Greatest Hits, a Rameau Overture to Summer Stomp!! From 4year olds to late teens – they all had a great time.

A big THANKYOU to the conductors, helpers and MfE staff for making it such a great Covid secure musical success.

Hello everyone,

Today was meant to be the day we would all hear that Step 4, the final unlocking was going to take place, as scheduled, on Monday 21^st June. But as we now all know – that isn’t going to take place.

So where does that leave us as far as everything we have planned for the remainder of this season?

At the moment, this is how things stand:

Tuesday 14^th June – Daytime Voices rehearsal at the Albert Hall. This has been cancelled.

Sunday 27^th June 10am – 5pm – Adult Singing Workshop at the Albert Hall. ‘Let all the world in every corner Sing!’ We are awaiting guidance from Making Music, the national organisation which represents amateur music making societies, to see if this can still go ahead. Saturday 17^th July 1.30 – 4.30pm – Family Sing Workshop afternoon at the Albert Hall. We are awaiting guidance from Making Music to see if this can still go ahead. More information to follow very soon.

Hope you are all well and enjoying the sunshine!

I’m afraid there is nothing much to report this week, we just wait for the next announcement from the government scheduled for 14^th June – I don’t think they are going to have a change of heart on singing indoors until then!

But MfE is still busy and we have youth instrumental events happening at the Albert Hall over the weekend of 19/20 June. Visit our website to find out more!

PS. I received an email from Making Music, the national body which represents amateur music making in the UK. It is an update as to where things are on the ‘6 singers only’ campaign. It’s quite long but interesting – I think we might be getting somewhere. If possible, please do respond by writing to your MP – the Making Music article gives you guidance as to what to say! Hello everyone

Well I’m afraid that despite our best efforts, the government have still not seen sense about the ‘6 singers only’ guidance!

Many thanks to all of you who have written to your MPs and also signed the petition asking the government to re-think their guidance. If you haven’t signed it yet it’s not too late, just click here. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/586559

But we don’t let a bit of guidance put us off! On Wednesday, not defeated by the weather, the MfE Chamber Choir, the East of England Singers, managed to have a rehearsal (observing all Covid protocols) at St Leonard’s Community Hall – split initially into groups of 6 and then, once the rain had stopped, outside in the garden. So we continue to wait and hope – and we keep cheerful!

Hello everyone,

Well what a week of frustration and disappointment!

There we all were, along with thousands of other singers throughout the country, looking forward so much to joining together and having a SING!!

But – as I’m sure you are now all aware – the government made a screeching u-turn round about 5pm last Tuesday regarding choir rehearsals and singing was proclaimed DANGEROUS!! Professional choirs are able to sing together but only 6 amateur singers are allowed to sing under one roof!!

This meant that one of our choir rehearsals on Wednesday evening could not go ahead as planned and our Family Singing Afternoon at the Albert Hall, which was going to be a wonderful event with almost 100 singers from across the generations enjoying themselves together, was scuppered and has had to be rescheduled for later in the year (17^th July). And it looks as though our Daytime Voices rehearsal scheduled for Wednesday of this week will have to be cancelled. We’ll be in touch with singers round about lunchtime tomorrow to let you know what’s happening.

So we’ve hit the media to express our feelings!

So what can you do?

Write to your MP – John wrote to his and she raised it with the Prime Minister at the meeting of the 1922 Committee of Conservative MPs.
Sign this on-line petition – very easy to do and it will make a difference. Let’s see if we can make Nottingham and the surrounding areas bright red on the petition map. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/586559
Make representation to anyone you know in high places.
Hope that the government sees sense!!

Hello everyone – Angela here again!

Well we have now moved to Step 3 of the easing of lockdown – hooray.

As you know, our first event is the Family Singing Afternoon this coming Sunday. Robin Reece Crawford, who many of you know, was recently interviewed on Radio Nottingham by Frances Finn. She asked him about who was leading the workshop, how we were going to make the whole event Covid Secure, and most importantly, what were people going SING!

Hello everyone

I’m sure many of you would have heard the welcome news that, as from Monday 17^th May, we will have all moved (if you live in England) from Step 2 to Step 3 in the lifting of Covid restrictions.

This is really good news for MfE and it means that our first planned event at the Albert Hall, our Family Sing Workshop has got the green light!

This fun afternoon of singing is especially designed for children aged 5+ with their families – mums, dads, grandparents, carers, aunts and uncles – come and make a bubble! And if you are an adult and would just like to come for a good sing then you would be made very welcome.

Let’s raise the roof of the Albert Hall with SINGING!!

Hello everyone

I’m sure many of you will have watched the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh. One of our Wollaton Daytime Voices members, Elspeth Brien, sent me this very interesting article by John Rutter in which he reflects on the lack of comment on the excellent music included in the service. It’s very interesting and well worth a read.

And whilst we’re talking about ‘having a read’ – our three Bookwise shops have all re-opened and are ready to welcome you through their front doors. These shops successfully raise vital funds to support Music for Everyone’s programme of events and also raise the profile of MfE in the local community. Selling excellent quality second hand books, they also have a wonderful selection of CDs and sheet music for sale all at bargain prices – why not come and have a browse!

Donations are always welcome and can often be collected and more volunteers are always needed, either in the shop or behind the scenes. Email admin@music-for-everyone.org for more details.

The opening hours for the shops are as follows:

Nottingham (10 Goose Gate, Nottingham NG1 1FF) Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 4pm

Newark (2 Queen’s Head Court, Newark NG24 1EL) Monday to Saturday, 10.00 am to 4:30pm

Southwell (2 Queen Street, Southwell NG25 0AA) Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm (Monday might have restricted opening due to lack of volunteers)

Daytime Voices is back!

We are holding two Daytime Voices rehearsals at the Albert Hall in Nottingham – one on Wednesday 26^th May (2pm – 3.45pm) and one on Tuesday 15^th June (2pm – 3.45pm).
