East of England Singers | New Year Celebration
St Mary's Church, Radcliffe on Trent

Partnered by the New Classical Players, the East of England Singers devoted the first half of Saturday evening to Vivaldi's Gloria in D major (RV 589).
This is a largely festive piece in a key expressive of triumph. It has, though, its serious moments. Conductor Matt Beckingham chose speeds well suited to the choir, allowing time for reflection amid the rejoicing.
Sarah Kay and Angela Kay duetted splendidly in the movement Laudamus Te. The soprano was beautifully accompanied by the violin in Domine Deus, and the mezzo by a solo cello in her movement with chorus.
Nottingham Youth String Orchestra provided lively support for soloist Ting Chiu in his masterly performance of Telemann's Viola Concerto in G. Directed by Angela Kay, they also offered contrasting excerpts from Stephen Maniam's recent Suite.
The East of England Singers found wit and variety in John Rutter's Childhood Lyrics, while the Youth Chamber Choir entertained the ear with music from Les Misérables under Jane McDouall's direction.
All the performers combined in a stirring piece from the film Cry Freedom, based on an African national anthem.
